The following is an excerpt from Peter Hiett’s book Epiphany,<\/a>\u00a0pages 42-47:<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So, what\u2019s the deepest story?<\/strong><\/p>\n

There\u2019s one more very challenging question for the reader of Genesis 1: How\u00a0could a character in God\u2019s story write himself out of that story? I mean, who has more\u00a0authority — the character or the author? You or God? Even if you had free will:<\/p>\n

Could your free will trump God\u2019s free will?<\/p>\n

Could your hatred overpower His love?<\/p>\n

Could you turn Him into a fact in your story such that you no longer were a fact in\u00a0His story — God\u2019s story –the One \u201cwho accomplishes all things according\u00a0to the counsel of His will\u201d? (Ephesians 1:11)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

So what\u2019s the deepest story?<\/p>\n

Your badness . . . or God\u2019s goodness?<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Several years ago I realized that there was one more way to reconcile the Genesis<\/p>\n

story and modern science:<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Relativity<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>Einstein\u2019s theories of relativity are no longer just theories but tested\u00a0hypotheses verified through experimentation (unlike evolution). Relativity and\u00a0quantum mechanics teach us that we should not take space and time so seriously, for\u00a0they are relative to things like light and even word. It\u2019s something Scripture told us all\u00a0along. We just didn\u2019t believe it.<\/p>\n

Gerald Schroeder is a Jewish physicist from MIT who now teaches in Jerusalem.\u00a0In his books, he reminds us that time is relative to differences in velocity and gravity, and\u00a0that time is dilated by the expansion of the universe. Therefore, the universe is different\u00a0ages in different places. To answer the question \u201cHow old is the universe?\u201d you must\u00a0determine the frame of reference — that is, where the observer is standing.\u00a0We always assume our own\u00a0frame of reference, (As if we were God our\u00a0something). We always assume planet Earth, now and me. But in the beginning, there\u00a0was no planet Earth. Where would The Author be standing?<\/p>\n

Schroeder argues that if we, (here and now, on earth), measure the age of the\u00a0universe at 15 billion years, but then ask how long 15 billion years would be from the\u00a0standpoint of Creation, (that is, from the moment matter formed, from the perspective of\u00a0the entire universe tuned to the cosmic background radiation from the Big Bang; that is as\u00a0close as we can get to the standpoint of the Big Bang)\u2026 if the universe is 15 billion years\u00a0old from earth\u2019s perspective, it\u2019s about six days old from Creation\u2019s perspective. 15\u00a0billion years or so, is literally six days. That\u2019s just physics. I suppose you could argue the\u00a0details (estimates regarding the mass of the Universe etc.), but it\u2019s very clear that time is\u00a0relative. It\u2019s relative to the speed of light, and God is light.\u00a015 billion years is literally (physically, actually, really) six days.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd these are the generations of the heavens and the earth\u201d (Genesis 2:4).<\/p>\n

\u201cA day is as a thousand years and a thousand years is as a day\u201d (2 Peter 3:8).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

It\u2019s what the Bible said all along. We just didn\u2019t believe it.\u00a0So, I\u2019m Old Earth and Young Earth. I\u2019m even younger than the young-earthers.<\/p>\n

When I read Schroeder’s book, a ton of scientific problems dissolved away, but even\u00a0better tons of theological problems did the same. Because what does this mean? It\u00a0means the seventh day is not over; the story isn\u2019t over. We\u2019re still being made in God\u2019s\u00a0image. Actually, according to Schroeder\u2019s calculations, it appears that we are at the end\u00a0of the sixth day, the edge of the seventh day. Perhaps God will still say, \u201cBehold, it\u2019s all\u00a0very good\u201d or perhaps even, \u201cIt is finished.\u201d Whatever the case, time is relative to Him.<\/p>\n

The Deepest Story<\/strong><\/p>\n

Now, if that\u2019s just science, I should drop it. But it\u2019s not. It\u2019s what the Bible said\u00a0all along. We just didn\u2019t believe it. After day seven, the next verse in Genesis says,<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen no plant of the field was yet in the earth . . . then the Lord God formed man of<\/p>\n

dust\u201d (Genesis 2:5-7).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

By Genesis, Chapter 2, we\u2019re back in day six, and God is still\u00a0making mankind in His image. He doesn\u2019t stop at The Fall. In fact, Jesus in John 5\u00a0literally says, \u201cMy Father has been working until now and I am working\u201d (5:17). That\u00a0means His Father had not yet rested in space and time since the beginning of space and\u00a0time.\u00a0After the description of the seventh day in Genesis 2:1-3, God never says that He\u00a0is finished with His work until John 19:30 when Jesus,<\/p>\n

The Word made flesh,<\/p>\n

The Plot made flesh,<\/p>\n

The Ultimate, Eschatos, Adam,<\/p>\n

Firstborn of All Creation,<\/p>\n

The Perfect Image of the Invisible Creator,<\/p>\n

at the end of the sixth day, a Friday,<\/p>\n

lifts His head as He hangs on the tree of law<\/p>\n

and cries: \u201cIt is finished.\u201d<\/p>\n

He is the edge of the seventh day.<\/p>\n

He is the point at which eternity touches time and gives meaning to all things.<\/p>\n

He is the plot to the deepest story and to your story.<\/p>\n

He is the Beginning and the End.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The deepest story is not dependent on your story. Your story is dependent on the\u00a0deepest story. The deepest story is not The Fall. The deepest story is not your sin. The\u00a0deepest story is that God is making you in His image. Jesus is His image, and you are His\u00a0Temple, Body and Bride. The deepest story is that God is making you in His Image and\u00a0will not fail.<\/p>\n

So even though we wrote ourselves out of the story; even though we cursed the\u00a0voice; even though we crucified the Plot on the tree; even though we tried to make Him\u00a0just a fact in our story, even that is a story within The Story – The Father\u2019s Story.\u00a0The Father is still telling our story in space and time. He never stopped. Actually,\u00a0when we crucified the Plot, we revealed the Plot and that was the Plot. It\u2019s there that we\u00a0get the Plot, fall in love with the Plot and ingest the Plot. It\u2019s there that we surrender our\u00a0story to His Story. There, we are created in His Image.<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus Christ and Him crucified.\u201d That\u2019s the plot.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We die with Him, then, live with Him in the seventh day.\u00a0He died and rose from the dead saying, \u201cMy Father is your Father\u201d (John 15:21).\u00a0You are not an orphan. You are not an extra. You have His name. At His table, you ingest\u00a0the Plot: body broken and blood shed. You ingest Mercy. You ingest the Plot and become\u00a0the Body of the Plot. What kind of story is it? The genre is Gospel. Although you wrote\u00a0yourself out, He wrote you in with His Blood. That\u2019s Gospel. It\u2019s the deepest Story. That\u00a0means it\u2019s eternal.<\/p>\n

I have an amazing friend named Elaine. She had a horrid childhood. Her Father\u00a0Worshipped Satan and her mother seemed powerless to help. Over the years God has\u00a0allowed me and my wife to be used by Him in delivering Elaine from some very dark\u00a0memories and horrific bondage. Late one night, Susan and I prayed with her over one of\u00a0her first memories as a little child. The way Jesus heals her is that He reveals His\u00a0presence in these old memories through visions, and then His presence reveals the\u00a0deepest story: His relentless love. My wife often sees the visions along with Elaine.\u00a0On this night, because of this memory, Elaine had come to believe she was an\u00a0orphan, only worse than an orphan\u2026 a child of evil. Jesus appeared in a vision and gave\u00a0new meaning to all the old facts in Elaine\u2019s story. My wife Susan saw Him do this along\u00a0with Elaine. At one point, she leaned over to me and whispered, \u201cPeter, Jesus has\u00a0something to give Elaine. It\u2019s a birth record.\u201d<\/p>\n

I said, \u201cElaine, Jesus has a present for you. Will you let Him give it to you?\u201d She\u00a0was terrified that it would be some form of condemnation, but finally, she held out her\u00a0hand. I asked, \u201cWhat did He give you, Elaine?\u201d She said, \u201cOh, it\u2019s only a piece of paper.\u201d\u00a0I said, \u201cRead it.\u201d<\/p>\n

In this vision, as we held her and prayed, Elaine looked at the piece of paper. All\u00a0at once she gasped saying, \u201cIt\u2019s a birth certificate\u2026 and it\u2019s, like, glowing with light! It\u2019s\u00a0written in blood!\u201d On the birth certificate was her name. I asked, \u201cElaine, what\u2019s the date\u00a0on the birth certificate?\u201d She paused and then exclaimed, \u201cOh, there isn\u2019t a date . . . It\u2019s\u00a0eternal!\u201d<\/p>\n

You see, that means it\u2019s the deepest story\u2014a gift from the seventh day. With her\u00a0birthright, her birth certificate, in one hand and a flaming sword in the other, Elaine\u00a0battles the ancient Serpent refusing to believe his lies. She undoes the powers of chaos\u00a0and the void with the Deepest Story, Our Lord Jesus.<\/p>\n

I believe you have a birth certificate. And it\u2019s eternal. It\u2019s the deepest story about\u00a0you. It\u2019s\u2026<\/p>\n

The Deepest Story in You<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sorry: one more movie \u2013 none more profound. There is a great little episode of\u00a0Winnie the Pooh on one of the videos I used to watch with my kids. In the video,\u00a0Tigger\u2019s \u201cbouncing\u201d gets him in a heap of trouble. He bounces himself right out of the\u00a0story and into the branch of an enormous tree. He\u2019s terrified. The tree is an illustration\u00a0that appears next to the words in the book that the narrator is reading on the video. Tigger\u00a0hears the narrators voice and cries, \u201cFor goodness sakes, narrate me down from here.\u201d At\u00a0that, the narrator laughs, turns the world upside down (the book, on it\u2019s side) and tells\u00a0Tigger to \u201clet go.\u201d Tigger believes the word on the tree. And so he drops from the tree\u00a0and stands on the word (the print on the page). The narrator then turns the book and\u00a0Tigger bounces down the words onto the ground. Through the word the narrator delivers\u00a0him from peril on the tree and back to earth — a new heaven and new earth.<\/p>\n

If you watched that video when you were a little kid and thought, \u201cThat\u2019s so cool;\u00a0I wish it was real,\u201d it is! It is real! We\u2019ve bounced ourselves out of the story and into a\u00a0tree. The Father tells us to \u201clet go\u201d \u2013 surrender control. His Word comes to us on that tree\u00a0and He delivers us from nowhere to somewhere \u2013 His Story. And that\u2019s the new and\u00a0eternal plot; that\u2019s the story. We bounce ourselves out and He narrates us back in. It\u2019s\u00a0called the Gospel, and you need to believe it. Why? Because when you believe it, it\u00a0changes the meaning of every fact in your story, even the meaning of that tree. It changes\u00a0you\u2026 It\u2019s the Word in you. The Deepest Story in you – The image of God.<\/p>\n

We can write ourselves out of our own story, but not out of God\u2019s Story,<\/p>\n
